VA-35 NAVY Attack Squadron History  DVD

EUROPE: 1933 While Hitler was consolidating his power, the world was paralyzed. By 1934, there was virtually no one prepared to stop his blitzkrieg of Western Europe. Only a few saw him for what he was, while the rest of the world adopted a 'wait and see' attitude. UNITED STATES: 1934 Back home, Prohibition had ended, leaving Americans in a gay and festive mood. Entering into another war was the last thing on their collective minds. However, there were a few people in the Navy Department, not wanting the US to be caught off guard, who decided that there should be a new bomber attack squadron. Hence, on July 1, 1934, the VB-3B  became a reality in Norfolk, Virginia. VB-3B 1934: The VB-3B were the pioneers of carrier aviation.  On the SS Lexington, The Black Panthers became the only ship-based squadron to fly the BG-1 bi-plane, with 750 hp. and a maximum speed of 188 mph. This BG-1 flying squadron gave birth to the VA-35 flying the A6-E Intruder. During the 1930's, the squadron was based on the West Coast between San Diego and Panama. This was the time of the search for Amelia Earhart, and the squadron was then known as VB-4. In the last years of the 30's, two different aircraft were used, one of which was the Vindicator.  In July 1939, the squadron's designation was changed to VB-3. Meanwhile, Europe was at war, and Japan was conquering all of Southeast Asia. PEARL HARBOR 1941: December 7th, 1941, Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, and the American Pacific fleet is devastated. This was the beginning for VB-3. The Black Panthers went into action the next day, preparing the Saratoga. It took them a week to reach Pearl Harbor, and once there, they were ready for their first wartime cruise. The Saratoga was hit, and had to return to Pearl Harbor, where the squadron, a month later, boarded the SS Enterprise as part of the escort group, which was to launch the Mitchell bombers. Tokyo was the first raid. Later, aboard the Yorktown, the VB-3 squadron headed for Midway for the epic battle. MIDWAY, JUNE 4, 1942 Japan strikes at Midway successfully at first, but were surrounded by the US carriers: Yorktown, Hornet and Enterprise, from which the Japanese fleet was attacked . Various aircraft were launched from the Yorktown from the VB-3 and two other squadrons to attack and destroy.  The VB-3 destroyed the Soryou and made significant strikes against other ships. Rather than being able to return to the Yorktown they were re-directed to the Enterprise because on an impending attack. At some point the Japanese strategy made a fatal mistake and dive bombers were able to destroy a lot of their carriers. At the end of the day, the VB-3 squadron was instrumental in one of the most important decisive victories in naval history. After countless engagements throughout the war, the VB-3 boarded the Lexington in 1945 and headed for home. From 1943-45, several new aircraft joined their arsenal: the hell-diver series. Again, there was a new designation for the squadron in November of 1946: they were now known as the VA-3A. In 1948, the squadron received the Douglas AD-2 sky raiders and became newly designated once again as the VA-34. They would hold this designation until 1950 when the Black Panthers finally became known as the VA-35. In 1950, the Cold War steamed up when North Korea crossed over into South Korea and the VA-35 squadron once again was called into action. After the Korean War, the Black Panthers enjoyed a peaceful time, except for 1958, when they established themselves as pioneers in mid-air re-fuelling. The VA-35 squadron were the first to reach the troubled mid-east region of Lebanon. In 1959, the VA-35 received two major awards. From 1962-65, the squadron was assigned to Jacksonville and the Saratoga for 4 more Mediterranean deployments. One of them was to assist during the Cuban Missile crisis. The Viet Nam war brought the Panthers into its third  major military conflict. In 1965,  they received their first Grumman A6A Intruder aircraft.  In 1966, they were deployed to the SS Enterprise for their first combat tour in Viet Nam. Because of the sophisticated technology aboard the A6A's, the squadron once again made significant attacks, especially on Hanoi. All in all, the VA-35 saw action on 4 Western Pacific deployment fronts during 66-73, where they returned to Oceania and received their first A6-E Intruder. During the 1970's, they spent of their time in peaceful training exercises.  In the 1980, they became the first aircraft to use radar advanced aircraft and from the SS.Nimitz, they  spent 144 days in the Indian Ocean monitoring the hostage situation in Iran. In 1987, they concluded their 10 year with the Nimitz, and in 1989 joined the S. S. Roosevelt for its initial Med deployment. Also in 1989, they began its first night attack technology deployment. The NVD's, in conjunction with the A6-E's already advanced technology were unprecedented for their stealth and maneuverability.  In 1990, once again, the VA-35 squadron became a part of the Iraqi war and Dessert Shield/Dessert Storm. During the 8 month long deployment, the Black Panthers would set many Navy firsts, which played strongly in the eventual liberation of Kuwait from the Iraqi forces. In 1992, another Med cruise was completed aboard the Saratoga, and again in 1994 for sea exercises in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, where they helped peace-keepers in Bosnia . The sophisticated ordnance, by this time, included: harpoon, laser and IR Maverick, Sidewinder, Walleye, Shrike, Harm and Slam missiles, as well as the the Navy's new GBU-24, Laser, Cluster, Mines, Destructors and MK-30's
