Los Angeles Airport  Historic Aviation Film DVD

The hustle-bustle life of a busy airport is shown: planes arriving and taking off, parking lot traffic, tower scenes; passengers coming and going inside and outside the airport. There are numerous scenes of planes waiting,  being serviced, flying, and a lot of attention to air-to-ground scenes of airports, showing their magnitude of size and space.  Musical background with no narration. The Story of Los Angeles  International   Airport:  Number #1 Worldway The beginning of the airport in 1930 to the 1950's where major growth took place to bring the airport into the jet age. June 1961, the airport was dedicated by Lyndon Johnson. Back then, the airport was 3,000 acres with six terminals and room for a seventh.  Helicopter scenes of the airport from above show the city it has become . The parabolic arches of the main building are shown, encompassing  an eternal flame, international flags, a restaurant and sight-seeing deck. The 5000 car parking lot , the flow of traffic around the central building, outside baggage deposit and ticketing, and even automatic baggage handling is shown and discussed.  The impressive lobby is highlighted showing off the amenities of the times: everything from baby  nursery to automated flight information to restaurants. The impressive underground fueling systems are  also shown and discussed . Tower control for approach and take-off is highlighted, showing operations in progress between controller and pilot aided by radar.  More amenities for passengers: rented cars and helicopter taxi services are discussed.  The maintenance crew for the airport is shown handling not just runways, but the public areas, the floors, the landscape, the building exteriors, electrical systems, etc. Air freight and air express services including air mail is another big part of the airport business. At that time there were 11 carriers serving the pubic for  international flights. Processing centers for customs, etc. are shown and discussed. Approximately 33,000 employees worked at the Los Angeles Airport then, with a weekly salary of $4 million. 18,000 are aerospace specialists and many more specialties are pointed out: from office workers to stewardesses to mechanics to food workers to passenger agents. The financing of the airport is discussed: monies come in from the government and airline tenants and parking.  Construction is handled through bond issues that don't impact the taxpayer. Restaurants, theme shops and concessions help as well.  Your City-Owned Los Angeles International Airport:  Gateway to the World:  The advancements and growth of the LA Airport is shown in all aspects of the airport: from passenger to mail and freight services. Behind the scenes activity is discussed: air control tower, freight services and  air mail. Aircraft manufacturing at LA Airport is discussed, not just for the Air Force but also for the Navy.  At the time of the film, 3,000 more acres had been acquired for the expansion of LA Airport. 1980 is Tomorrow:  Shots of the glamorous, exciting hustle bustle of LAX. The parking lot currently holds spaces for 12,000 cars, and will eventually expand to 30,000 spaces. 35,000 people work at LAX handling over 2000 flights daily. Shots of the airport back in 1928. Development and expansion have been the key elements for 40 years.  In 1955, a mere 2.5 million people passed through the airport. They projected 40 million  people between 1975-1977.  Shots of the great airliners coming in and out: the Boeing 747 foresees the building of new boarding ramps.  By 1985, airport directors project an estimated 250 million people passing through airports  in the Southern California area. 40 million people passing through LAX annually is projected as the max. With this in mind, 3 nearby airports were quickly acquired:  Palmdale, Van Nuys, and Ontario, and expansion construction went into effect immediately. From the airport system, the economic input is huge: not just tourist dollars, but payroll dollars that go into the local economy.  Each airline creates dollars for the community
